The Carbo Plus
Norbert Zajac and his team of engineers and biologists have developed a device which won the 1999 German Industrial Prize for Best Technical Innovation. It consists of a regulator and a carbon sandwich which is mounted inside the aquarium.
Electrolysis frees CO2 from the carbon block. A dial allows control over the correct amount of CO2 for the aquarium - using harmless low voltage. The carbon cartridge will last about 8 weeks in a 65 gallon tank with medium carbonate hardness. And if the Carbo Plus is set on a timer to work only when the light is on, it will last up to twice as long.

Carbon Dioxide by Electrolysis
Good aquarists know that aquarium plants need all of the plant nutrients to grow properly. Most important of all is carbon dioxide (CO2), which is deficient in nearly all aquariums. (Water) plants produce sugar from light, water and CO2 and give off oxygen in the process.
This reaction, which is the fundamental basis of all life on earth, is called photosynthesis. To allow plants to grow properly in the aquarium and ensure the sufficient production of oxygen for the fishes, carbon dioxide usually has to be added to planted aquariums.

No More Pressure Canisters
The systems used up until now all consisted of a pressured gas cylinder, a pressure reducer, gauge, and a fine control valve. This is not a simple way to add CO2 to the aquarium because the CO2 supply changes depending on the temperature of the gas and the amount of actual gas left in the bottle.
Because CO2 influences the all important pH it is difficult to keep it constant. When the cylinder is empty it has to be refilled. Often getting your cylinder refilled involves several hours of your time – including time spent readjusting the system after the new bottle has been installed. This process is revolutionized by our new system.
Simply plug the Carbo Plus into a wall socket and it will provide your plants with carbon dioxide. At the same time it will lower the carbonate hardness (KH) to a near ideal value (around KH3).

Excellent Efficiency
A 240 liter (65 gal) aquarium, with medium carbonate hardness, will be supplied with carbon for 6-8 weeks at full capacity running 24 hours a day. If the Carbo Plus is turned off at night (plants do not need CO2 at night) and the dosage is adjusted, then it will last even longer.
Calculate your costs including the hassles and the time to ensure a supply of CO2 canisters and you will see that the Carbo Plus is more cost efficient than the traditional cylinder systems.
You control the CO2 production by turning the dial. The production remains constant even when you have just changed the Carbon Sandwich. This is another advantage over the traditional pressured gas cylinders whose pressure varies because of the influence of exterior temperature and volume content.

Changing the carbon cartridge is very easy. You simply open the stainless steel bracket and remove the exhausted carbon as shown in these photos.
You can save money by extending the life of the carbon block by turning the carbon cartridge around when it is nearly exhausted – because it always gets used from the top downwards!

Enormous Reach
The Carbo Plus can even reach CO2 saturation in much larger aquariums of 125 gallons – according to tests and customer testimonials. This is because of another Carbo Plus effect, the reduction of KH (carbonate hardness). The Carbo Plus reduces the KH to around 3 degrees, and water with lower KH needs less CO2 to reach the saturation point. This effect is especially interesting for aquarists who keep plants in very soft water.
Simply stand the unit with the carbon bar upright in your aquarium while its handy control dial remains outside where you can select the perfect level for your aquarium. A very fine "smoke" of carbon dioxide will appear immediately. No bubble counter, pressure tank, gas refills, valves or gauges needed. This system is so safe and convenient we know you'll love it!

Carbon block is 8 1/4" x 2 1/8" x 1". Base unit is 7 3/4" x 4" x 1 3/4"
