"To start a sodium high pressure and halogen metal lamp is an igniter necessary with the exception of a few special cases. The special cases refer to lamps with a built in starter. The igniters manufactured by MCE are the standard types and for a careful lamp start (Specification D). Additionally both types come as timer igniters with digital timer. The timer igniter switches off after a certain period of time when the lamp hasn't started. The advantages are by a lamp change with a timer no high voltage peaks are on the lamp socket, and no unnecessary ignited voltage peaks are generated that can destroy the isolation of the connecting cables and lead to interferences.
